The Power of Positivity

One of my favorite lines from music comes from The Beatles' song Hey Jude: "Take a sad song and make it better." That's great advice not only for life, but for business as well.

Baseball teaches us a lot about life. If you walk up to the plate convinced you're going to strike out, you've already put yourself at a disadvantage. The best hitters step into the batter's box believing they can make solid contact. Mindset matters.

Recently, my mom went through a serious health scare. While the situation was difficult, one thing stood out: her attitude. She never focused on what could go wrong. Instead, she focused on recovery and returning to normal life. That positive mindset didn't replace great medical care, but it certainly helped fuel her determination. Today, she’s making progress because she chose hope over fear.

The same principle applies in business. Look at Richard Branson. Throughout his career, he's faced setbacks, failed ventures, and countless obstacles. Yet he's built a reputation for optimism, resilience, and focusing on opportunities rather than excuses. Successful leaders like Branson don't spend their days complaining about problems. They spend their time finding solutions.

When I look back at my career, I notice something interesting about the successful people. Whether they were business owners, sales professionals, community leaders, etc. they weren't focused on negativity. They weren't constantly talking about why things couldn't be done. Instead, they focused on what was possible and what actions they could take to improve their situation.

Life will always throw us challenges. The key is deciding whether we're going to dwell on the problem or, as Paul McCartney wrote, take a sad song and make it better.
