Setting SMART Goals for 2027: Staffing Is Back in the Game

After a challenging few years, the staffing industry turned the corner in 2026. The American Staffing Association reported year-over-year growth in staffing employment and revenue, marking an important milestone after a prolonged slowdown. The industry appears to have some momentum heading into 2027, and many staffing companies are anticipating a stronger year ahead. While challenges remain, there are reasons to be optimistic. The question is whether your business is positioned to take advantage of the opportunities.

For independent staffing companies, a better market doesn't automatically translate into better results. Growing revenue, protecting margins, finding qualified candidates, and managing cash flow still require a plan. One of the simplest and most effective tools for building that plan is setting SMART goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. It helps turn good intentions into an actionable plan, particularly for small businesses that don't have the time or resources to develop complicated strategic plans.
AI Is No Longer Optional
Artificial intelligence has moved beyond being an interesting experiment. In 2027, AI should be a practical part of every staffing company's business strategy. On the sales side, AI can help identify prospective clients, research target accounts, personalize outreach, prepare for meetings, and develop marketing content. On the recruiting side, it can help source candidates, match skills to job requirements, summarize résumés, and automate routine communications. These tools can give smaller staffing firms capabilities that once required considerably more people and resources. Industry research also shows that staffing firms using AI are seeing improvements in recruiting productivity and business performance.
AI can also improve internal efficiency. Think about the time your team spends on data entry, reporting, candidate follow-ups, payroll questions, billing preparation, and other repetitive administrative tasks. The right tools can reduce that burden, allowing your employees to focus on activities that generate revenue and strengthen relationships. But buying technology isn't a strategy by itself. Identify the problems you want to solve, choose tools that fit your workflow, protect confidential client and candidate information, and measure the results. AI should help your people perform better, not eliminate the personal relationships that differentiate a successful staffing company. In 2027, the competitive advantage won't simply belong to firms using AI. It will belong to firms using it effectively.
Setting SMART Goals for 2027
Let's use sales and revenue as examples of how to put SMART goals to work.
Specific
Move beyond generic statements like "We need more business this year." That's about as effective as joining a gym in January without a workout plan.
Instead, identify two or three prospective clients that could meaningfully increase revenue. Determine who makes the decisions, what problems you can solve, and what steps are needed to win their business. A specific goal gives your team direction and a reason to act.
Measurable
You can't manage what you don't measure. Establish clear revenue, gross profit, new-client, and client-retention goals.
But don't fall into the trap of measuring activity for activity's sake. KPIs are useful when they lead to results. Making 50 calls doesn't mean much if none builds a relationship or advances a sale. Measure the activities that move prospects closer to becoming clients and candidates closer to placements.
Achievable
Ambitious goals are good. Unrealistic goals are not.
If your business grew 5% last year, setting a 100% growth target without a compelling reason or a credible plan isn't motivating. It is a recipe for frustration. Set goals that challenge your team while accounting for your existing business, sales pipeline, recruiting capacity, and financial resources.
Relevant
Your goals must reflect your market position and business model.
A specialized healthcare staffing firm may have different growth opportunities than a light-industrial staffing company. A boutique firm that commands premium rates may prioritize profitability over market share. Consider your niche, competition, client concentration, margins, and available working capital before deciding what success looks like.
Time-bound
Every goal needs a deadline.
If you want three new clients, establish when you expect to win them and when they should begin generating revenue. Break annual goals into quarterly milestones and review progress regularly. If results aren't materializing, determine whether the strategy needs to change before the year gets away from you.
Ready to Grow in 2027? Make Sure You Can Fund It
Growth takes cash. Payroll comes every week, but clients may take 60 days or more to pay. Madison Resources has spent more than 30 years helping independent staffing companies bridge that gap with funding and back-office solutions built for our industry.
Make 2027 Count
Set clear goals, focus on profitable growth, invest in the right technology, secure funding, and make sure your team understands what success looks like. Use AI to improve productivity, but don't lose sight of the relationships that drive staffing.
You don't need a complicated business plan to make meaningful progress. You need realistic goals, consistent execution, and a willingness to adjust when circumstances change.
