Beyond The Desk: Let’s Set Aside Price and Focus on Actual Needs First

Maintaining price integrity in a staffing agency isn’t about being the cheapest - it’s about being honest and aligned with the value you actually deliver.
Let’s start with a simple truth: mark-ups matter. In staffing, your bill rate is built on top of the pay rate, taxes, insurance, and overhead. Once those hard costs are covered, even a small increase in bill rate flows almost entirely to the bottom line. Even a 10 cent per hour increase flows right to profit. That’s why discounting too quickly is one of the fastest ways to erode margin and undermine long-term stability.
But here’s the mistake many firms make: they lead with price.

At Madison, we take a different approach with the funding service we offer. We set price aside initially and focus on understanding what the staffing firm actually needs. Because the reality is, not every account is a fit, and not every problem should be solved the same way.
We get to know the client. Who are they placing? Where are they placing them? What are the funding challenges? What challenges are they facing operationally? Then we go deeper: What services do they truly need? What is the current volume, DSO, and sales growth? Are they trying to scale quickly, stabilize cash flow, or improve fill rates?
Only after we understand the full picture do we build a solution. And it’s never off-the-shelf. It’s tailored, something that aligns with their business model and supports sustainable growth. When you take this approach, pricing becomes part of a broader value conversation, not a race to the bottom.
And yes, sometimes the answer is no.
There are times when the type of funding or service we offer simply isn’t the right fit. And that’s okay. Walking away from the wrong business is just as important as winning the right business. It protects your margins and your reputation.
Price integrity isn’t about holding firm for the sake of it, it’s about earning the right to your price through understanding, discipline, and delivering real value.
